Validate before you build: research the AI can actually use

A short research brief makes your product better and makes the AI build better. Here’s what to put in one.

AI builds much better from real thinking than from a one-line idea. A research brief gives it that thinking, and it makes you check the idea is worth building at all.

What a useful brief covers

  1. 01The problem, in the words of people who have it
  2. 02Who already solves it, and where they fall short
  3. 03Why the problem happens: the behaviour or science behind it
  4. 04The one thing you’ll do differently

Talk to five people first

Before you finish the brief, describe the problem to five people who might have it. Don’t pitch. Ask when it last happened and what they did about it. Write down their exact words. They’ll end up in your PRD and on your landing page.
